To prepare for Phase II, painting the mural, we encouraged community members to nominate someone who made a positive impact in their community and who embodies the values of the MVMC which are: collaboration, compassion, respect and celebration.

From the nominations, we held a community-wide vote to choose the 9 faces to be painted on the mural.
The winners were: Cesar Chavez, Mahatma Gandhi, Jane Goodall, Chief Standing Bear, Malala Yousafzai, Maya Angelou, Nelson Mandela, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Harvey Milk.

Phase II

Phase II was completed on April 25th 2016 with the generous support of the WabiSabi Make a Difference grant.

The Moab Valley Multicultural Center (MVMC) was able to recruit nine local artists who each painted a panel depicting a peaceful change leader. The list of leaders is as follows, including the artist who painted him/her:

  • Cesar Chavez, Margie Lopez-Read
  • Mahatma Gandhi, Dailey Harren
  • Jane Goodall, Nara Bopp-Williams
  • Chief Standing Bear, Jon Gottschalk
  • Malala Yousafzai, Alina Murdock
  • Maya Angelou, Sara Amarie
  • Nelson Mandela, Sarah Stock
  • Eleanor Roosevelt, Peter Apicella
  • Harvey Milk, Serah Mead

We believe all of these individuals have made positive contributions to society based on the great accomplishments they have brought to life in their communities and beyond.

Phase III

We are currently completing phase III. Viewing benches have been added, permanent signage is now up, and a free audio tour is offered through this webpage!

We are also developing an interactive curriculum that will transform the Multicultural Mural into Moab’s first outdoor diversity classroom. Next school year, the Multicultural Mural will be available to host class field trips!
