Day of the Dead Festival 2016

On October 30, 2016 We hosted our 6th annual Day of the Dead Festival! During this one-day event and fundraiser, the MVMC’s yard was transformed into a colorful and traditionally decorated cemetery to honor our deceased loved ones. There was delicious authentic food, kids activities, face painting, cultural information, music, and dancing!


Mariachi Band: Sol de Jalisco

For the 2016 Day of the Dead Festival, with the support from the community via a mariachi raffle, we brought the mariachi band Sol de Jaliso to Moab!


Day of the Dead Family Art Night

In partnership with the Moab Art and Recreation Center, we were happy to host the Day of the Dead Family Art Night! This free event was an evening for families to visit stations and make a variety of Day of the Dead themed artwork!


Dancing with the MOAB Stars 2016

The third annual Dancing with the MOAB Stars was held on September 23, 2016. This show is based on the popular TV program Dancing with the Stars, but in this version, MOAB celebrities are paired with local dance instructors for a friendly dance competition. This fun community event and unique MVMC fundraiser was an absolute hit!


High School Q & A with Paquito D’Rivera

On September 2, 2016 Grammy award winner Paquito D’Rivera held a Q & A with Grand County High School students to discuss his music, life, and culture. This event was made possible by our partnership with the Moab Music Festival.


Chinese Culture Night

On August 16, 2016 MVMC hosted a celebration of Chinese Culture. Throughout the summer, we had been lucky to welcome a whole new volunteer group of Chinese students and they collaborated with us to host a Chinese Culture Night. We shared homemade Chinese food, learned some of the language, and also celebrated our new friend Palmer’s birthday.


Margaritas, Music, and Mariscos: Celebrating Cultures of the Coast

On May 7, 2016 we hosted an evening of Margaritas, Music, and Mariscos (seafood) while celebrating coastal cultures. A suggested donation of $25 (to benefit the MVMC) included a seafood dinner, delicious refreshments, and a cultural presentation. Special thanks to the Atomic Lounge for providing the venue, Mike Navarre for hosting the event, and Sheri Griffith Expeditions for catering the delicious meal.


Day of the Dead Festival 2015

Our 4th annual Day of the Dead festival was a blast with over 500 people celebrating with us by touring the cultural exhibits, eating authentic Mexican food, making kids crafts, and dancing to a live mariachi band!


Mariachi Band: Sol de Jalisco

For the 2015 Day of the Dead Festival on November 1st, with the support from the community via a mariachi raffle, we brought the mariachi band Sol de Jaliso to Moab!

The music was fabulous and featured classic mariachi songs. The celebratory atmosphere gave way to an open dance floor, and the festival concluded with the mariachi leading a procession through the altars and tombs to serenade our departed loved ones.

The 2nd annual Dancing with the MOAB Stars was just as, if not more, successful than the original event. This year, we used a  larger venue, but that didn’t stop the show from being sold-out again! A great time was had by all!

Day of the Dead Festival 2014

 

The 2014 Day of the Dead Festival was a successful community event with traditional decorations, cultural exhibits, authentic Mexican food, and a Kid’s Tent.


Dancing with the Moab Stars 2014

The first Dancing with the MOAB Stars event proved to be a bigger success than anyone had expected! It was a sold out show, the audience gave raving reviews, and the dances were spectacular! A great time was had by all!


Navajo Hoop Dancers

The MVMC, in partnership with the Native American Club and sponsored by Utah Humanities Council, brought Navajo hoop dancer Jospeh Secody and friends to preform at the Moab Beer, Wine, and Arts Festival on May 23, 2014.


Singer-songwriter Sand Sheriff 

The oral history of Dr. William Gonzalez performed by singer-songwriter Sand Sheff with musical accompaniment. Performance was part of the 2013 Moab Arts Festival.
